Eligibility

Temporary visitor's visa

- A rail pass user must be holding a passport issued by a foreign government.

※外国での永住権を持っているお客様を含め、日本国籍のお客様は使用できません。

- A rail pass user must be entering in Japan as a "短期滞在 (Temporary Visitor) ".

* "短期滞在 (Temporary Visitor) " is a status of residence defined under Japanese immigration law.

- Individual customers are not allowed to purchase or exchange more than one of the same ticket for the same use period.

- You must present your passport to receive a pass.

Purchasing a rail pass

Purchasing Exchange Order through a Travel Agency outside Japan

  • Step 1. Purchase an exchange order (MCO: Miscellaneous Charges Order or E-TICKET) at sales locations outside Japan.

    • * Once issued, the MCO or E-TICKET must be exchanged within 3 months.
  • Step 2. After entering in Japan, present the MCO or E-TICKET with a passport at exchange locations, fill out an application with necessary details, and exchange for a rail pass.

    • * The MCO or E-TICKET that could not be exchanged can be refunded at the overseas travel agency where the pass was originally purchased. (*A separate handling fee will be applied.)

Purchasing a pass via JR-WEST ONLINE TRAIN RESERVATION

  • Step 1. Purchase a pass via JR-WEST ONLINE TRAIN RESERVATION.
    * Payment must be made by credit card when reserving tickets. Payment cannot be accepted at the station.
    * Virtual and numberless credit cards cannot be used.
  • Step 2. When choosing paying by credit card in advance, use the following at a station ticket vending machine or station ticket office to receive your pass, after arriving in Japan. Click here for details.
    • (1) Reservation number
    • (2) Identification number *A 4-digit number you set
    • (3) Credit card *The one used to make the reservation
    • (4) Passport
    • * A passport with an IC chip is required to receive a pass from a ticket vending machine. Travelers with a passport that does not have an IC chip must receive their pass from the ticket office.

NOTE:
Reservations are accepted via JR-WEST ONLINE TRAIN RESERVATION from one month before boarding (starting at 10:00 am (JST) on the same day of the preceding month).

Purchasing from a travel agency

  • · Passes can be purchased from a travel agency in Japan.

    · A rail pass is purchasable up to 1month in advance of the first day of use.

Availability and Use

  • · A rail pass is available and usable all year around.
  • · A rail pass is valid for consecutive days.
  • · The pass will be valid at 0:00 from the start day to 24:00 on the last day (all times JST).
    However, if the validity period expires while riding a train on the last day, the pass will be valid for the fare until the following day so long as the passenger does not exit the station, and for ticket fees so long as the passenger does not depart the train.

Reserving a Reserved Seat Ticket

  • · Reserved seat tickets can be reserved at a ticket vending machine or a station ticket office.

  • · Seat reservations are also available online for passes reserved via JR-WEST ONLINE TRAIN RESERVATION.
  • * For passes with unlimited seat reservations, seats must be reserved at the JR ticket office from the 7 th booking.

Changes

  • · The starting date of the rail pass, duration, and pass type cannot be changed after exchanging the exchange order.
  • · Validity periods will not be extended even in the event of non-availability of train services, delays, etc.
  • · Conditions vary for reservations submitted via JR-WEST ONLINE TRAIN RESERVATION. Click here for more information.

Refunds

  • · The exchange order that could not be exchanged can be refunded at the overseas travel agency where the pass was originally purchased. (*A separate handling fee will be applied.)
    If a rail pass has already been exchanged, refunds are only possible at the ticket counters of exchange locations in Japan. (Travel agencies where the pass was purchased cannot refund an already exchanged rail pass.)
  • · Refund price: the sale price minus a handling fee (10% of the price: Minimum 220 yen per one rail pass)
  • · No refund will be given after a rail pass starts to be used or expired
  • · No refund will be given due to non-availability of service, delays, or similar issues

  • · Rail passes are only valid for the rail pass holder.
  • · Presentation of your passport when requested by JR staff is required to use a rail pass. Please keep your passport together with your rail pass.
  • · Lost or stolen rail passes cannot be reissued.

[NOTICE] Sanyo Shinkansen Passengers

  • · Starting May 20, 2020, passengers bringing baggage with dimensions totaling more than 160 cm but less than 250 cm on three sides (oversized baggage) on Sanyo Shinkansen are required to reserve a seat with an oversized baggage area. Shinkansen passengers with oversized baggage may use a reserved seating JR-WEST RAIL PASS and a section ticket, or a separate Unlimited Ride Oversized Baggage Ticket (available for purchase at JR-West Ticket Offices in major JR-West stations) if using a non-reserved seating JR-WEST RAIL PASS. Please ask a station attendant for more details.
