Izumo Oyashiro Shrine

Its symbolic main building, and the huge shimenawa (sacred rope) that hang from it, inspire deep respect in those who visit.

Matsue Castle

Matsue Castle is an Edo-period castle in Matsue City, Shimane Prefecture. It is known as one of the 12 remaining castles in Japan that have an original main keep. Lake Shinji

Spring

In spring, there are many famous spots in Shimane to view cherry blossoms. The cherry blossoms around Izumo Oyashiro Shrine and Matsue Castle are known to be particularly beautiful. The mild weather helps the spring flowers to bloom all at once. In Matsue, you can also enjoy the sight of rows of cherry trees from a Horikawa pleasure boat.

Summer

Summer in Shimane brings pleasant cool sea breezes and is the perfect season for swimming or sightseeing. The coasts of Hamada City and the Oki Islands offer beautiful beaches and crystal-clear water. You can also enjoy delicious summer seafood.

Fall

Come fall, the leaves in Shimane change colors and the mountains are awash in a range of hues. You can take in the fall scenery in the garden at the Adachi Museum of Art or around the ruins of the Iwami Ginzan Silver Mine, experiencing a sense of history and culture while you do so. Enjoy the serene tranquility and the crisp clean air.

Winter

Shimane’s winter brings beautiful snowy landscapes enveloped in serene silence. We recommend warming up in a hot spring such as those at Tamatsukuri Onsen.The streets of towns such as Tsuwano also let visitors experience the charm of a Shimane in winter.
