Interwoven sand and sea
The Tottori Sand Dunes are a tourist spot boasting magnificent natural scenery. Located in Tottori, they are an unforgettable sight facing the sea to the north. The vast sandy landscape stretches 2 km from north to south and 16 km from east to west. It is a beautiful area of natural heritage unique to Japan, created over a long period of time by the flow of the Chiyo River and the sea breeze. A section of the dunes is designated as part of the San’in Kaigan National Park.

The sea and the dynamic beauty of the dunes
The main appeal of the dunes lies in their scale and their dynamic beauty. Standing on the summit of the highest point in the dunes, known as Umanose (“the horse’s back” in Japanese), you will be overwhelmed by the contrast between the spectacular sand slopes, the deep blue ocean, and the broad azure sky stretching into the distance. It is a sight that is breathtakingly romantic at sunset, and it is the perfect spot for photography lovers.
Experience paragliding or riding a camel
There are a range of activities to enjoy at the Tottori Sand Dunes. Camel riding will give you the feeling of an exotic journey through the desert, while paragliding lets you ride the winds and enjoy a bird’s-eye view of the magnificent dunes from above. Sand boarding is a thrilling activity involving sliding down the sand slopes. There are other activities to enjoy as well, such as riding fat bikes through the dunes.
Sand art with a theme that changes every year
Close to the dunes is the Sand Museum, a museum like few others in the world that focuses uniquely on sand sculptures. The theme of these sculptures changes every year, so it is likely that you will find new discoveries and inspirations every time you visit. The intricate and powerful sand art is a must-see.
The tranquil white sand dunes in winter
When the snow builds up, the Tottori Sand Dunes assume a more otherworldly visage, with the serene immensity of the white sand taking on a soothing appearance.
