Izumo Oyashiro Shrine is one of Japan’s most sacred and mystical places. Situated in Izumo City in Shimane Prefecture, this shrine has been a center of religion and culture in Japan since ancient times. A giant rope and one of the largest wooden structures in Japan
The main shrine currently reaches a height of approximately 24 meters, and has been constructed using a unique technique known as “Taisha-zukuri.” One of the largest wooden structures in Japan, this building has a powerful presence.

In particular the giant shimenawa (sacred rope) supporting the roof is more than two meters in radius and 13 meters long, symbolizing a sacred space to welcome the gods.The shimenawa is replaced every four to eight years
A deity that brings people happiness
Izumo Taisha is where the deity Okuninushi-no-Okami is enshrined. The shrine is particularly known for bestowing blessings on matchmaking. In Japanese mythology, Okuninushi-no-Okami is known as the deity responsible for statebuilding, and is worshipped for bringing people happiness. It is said that worshiping earnestly at a shrine to Okuninushi-no-Okami or a place dedicated to a deity of matchmaking will bring you a good relationship.

Notable delights include Izumo Soba, with its enticing aroma, thin noodles made from buckwheat flour, and warm, flavorful broth. It is the perfect treat to follow after a shrine visit. There is much to see in the area around the shrine, such as the historical streets of Shinmon-dori and the beautiful sunsets at Inasa Beach.
