Memories of myths that transcend time and still live today

Izumo Oyashiro Shrine is one of Japan’s most sacred and mystical places. Situated in Izumo City in Shimane Prefecture, this shrine has been a center of religion and culture in Japan since ancient times. Among all the shrines throughout Japan, Izumo Oyashiro Shrine has an overwhelming presence and dignity that inspires awe with just a visit.

A giant rope and one of the largest wooden structures in Japan

The main shrine currently reaches a height of approximately 24 meters, and has been constructed using a unique technique known as “Taisha-zukuri.” One of the largest wooden structures in Japan, this building has a powerful presence.

In particular the giant shimenawa (sacred rope) supporting the roof is more than two meters in radius and 13 meters long, symbolizing a sacred space to welcome the gods. The shimenawa is replaced every four to eight years

A deity that brings people happiness

Izumo Taisha is where the deity Okuninushi-no-Okami is enshrined. The shrine is particularly known for bestowing blessings on matchmaking. In Japanese mythology, Okuninushi-no-Okami is known as the deity responsible for statebuilding, and is worshipped for bringing people happiness. It is said that worshiping earnestly at a shrine to Okuninushi-no-Okami or a place dedicated to a deity of matchmaking will bring you a good relationship.

Historic streets and regional food

The surrounding natural environment and the chance to sample local cuisine is something to look forward to when visiting Izumo Oyashiro Shrine. Notable delights include Izumo Soba, with its enticing aroma, thin noodles made from buckwheat flour, and warm, flavorful broth. It is the perfect treat to follow after a shrine visit. There is much to see in the area around the shrine, such as the historical streets of Shinmon-dori and the beautiful sunsets at Inasa Beach.

Clear air and enchanting fall leaves

The trees around Izumo Oyashiro Shrine are even more beautifully colored in fall, and a visit to the shrine in the clean, clear air amid so much history and nature is sure to calm the soul.
