Located in Kanazawa City, Ishikawa Prefecture, Kenrokuen is a Japanese garden that has won world-wide renown. Appealing in different ways in every season, it offers new discoveries with each visit.

Exquisitely arranged ponds, waterfalls, teahouses, and bridges

The biggest attraction of Kenrokuen Garden is the wonderful harmony of its landscape. Inside the garden are bridges, ponds such as Kasumigaike and Hisagoike, waterfalls such as as Midoritaki and Shigitatsusawa, and tea houses such as Shiguretei, all laid out in an artful arrangement that combines nature and craftsmanship in beautiful harmony. In particular, the reflections of the surroundings in the ponds, and the sound of the garden’s waterfalls bring peace and tranquility to visitors. Spring brings blooming cherry trees, and in fall the leaves turn beautiful colors, allowing you to enjoy something different with every season.

The winter tradition of yukitsuri

A traditional technique called “yukitsukuri” is used in Kenrokuen. You can see this technique used in winter, when ropes are tied to the tree to beautiful effect in order to protect them from the heavy snow. This unique scene is extremely popular with tourists from Japan and overseas alike as a Japanese winter tradition. The technique can be seen in other areas in Japan's snow country, but those in Kenrokuen are known for their beauty and scale.

A moment in a tea house

Kenrokuen Garden offers tea houses such as Shiguretei where you can take a break and enjoy some green tea. Tea ceremony experiences are not always available, but are held during special events. Experience classic Japanese gardens as you stroll through the grounds of Kenrokuen.

From Kanazawa Station, take a bus heading to Kenrokuen/Kanazawa Castle Park. Get off at the “Kenrokuen/Kanazawa Castle Park” bus stop after approximately 20 minutes. The entrance to Kenrokuen is approximately a 3-minute walk from the bus stop.
