The most beautifully preserved historic castle in Japan

The beautiful Himeji Castle is an iconic Japanese castle that was designated a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1993. Located in the city of Himeji in Hyogo Prefecture, it is also known as the “White Heron Castle” for its magnificent white appearance and historical value. Himeji Castle’s white walls and elegant roofs captivate viewers and give it the exquisite beauty of a white heron in flight.

Well-preserved historical architecture

Few castles in Japan are as well preserved as Himeji's, and its beauty is renowned both in Japan and around the world. The castle has been expanded over the centuries since the 1400s, reaching its present form in 1609. It recently underwent major repairs over a five-and-a-half-year period from 2009 to 2015 to maintain its beautiful appearance.

Medieval defensive technology and astonishing scale

More than anything, Himeji Castle is impressive for its grand scale. The five-tiered, six-story main keep with a basement is a superb architectural example of the defensive technology of the day, and offers visitors a chance to experience the history of Japan from the middle ages through to the modern era as they walk through its interior. You can view all of Himeji City from the keep.

Tour the inside of the castle to experience history and daily life

A visit to Himeji Castle is more than just a visit to a tourist spot—it’s a chance to feel its deep history. Visitors can view the historic buildings and gardens within the castle grounds and gain an appreciation for the lives of the rulers and samurai who resided there. There are displays inside where you can learn about the history and cultural heritage of the castle.

A white castle set against the backdrop of lush summer greenery and the blue sky

The greenery encircling the castle is even lusher in summer, making this the perfect sightseeing spot for this season. Take a stroll as you enjoy the sight of the beautiful castle under the vividly blue sky.
