A shrine with a torii gate that seems to float on the sea

Widely known as a shrine that seems to float on the sea, Itsukushima Shrine is a beautiful World Heritage site on MIyajima Island in Hatsukaichi City, Hiroshima Prefecture. The giant vermillion torii gate stadining in the sea is a particularly well-known symbol, reflecting on the water surface at low tide to create a magical sight. The giant Torii and the main shrine appear to be floating on the sea with a mysterious beauty that draws many sightseers.

Since its founding, Itsukushima Shrine has been worshipped for protection during sea voyages and for maritime safety. The construction of the shrine is notable for its design, which harmonizes beautifully with nature, featuring wooden buildings that fit perfectly with the surrounding sea and mountains to create a peaceful vista.

Historic streetscape and local cuisine

The area of Miyajima around the shine retains its historic streets and buildings and is pleasant to stroll around. Lined with souvenir stores and restaurants, these streets have been present since the Edo period and are a popular spot for tourists. Anago-meshi (conger eel and rice) and momiji manju are must-try treats. Momiji manju is a leaf-shaped confectionery intended to resemble brown maple leaves in fall. There is also a park called Momijidani Park on the island, which is the perfect sightseeing designation for fall.

Japanese culture encountered through festivals and sacred rituals

Festivals and ceremonies based on Shinto traditions are also held at Itsukushima Shrine, allowing visitors to experience Japanese culture amidst the shrine's sacred atmosphere. The Itsukushima Shrine Grand Festival is held every summer, featuring portable shrines and dances that are sure to impress visitors.

From Miyajimaguchi station, go to Miyaguchi Pier and catch an approx. 10-minute ferry ride to Miyajima Pier. Itsukushima is an approx. 12-minute walk from the pier.
