World Heritage Site, Historic Villages of Gokayama

In Gokayama, which is registered as a Cultural World Heritage, you can find the two villages of Ainokura and Suganuma, which belong to the "Historic Villages of Shirakawa-go and Gokayama" and feature Gassho-zukuri (prayer-hands construction) style architecture. Some facilities offer experiences in Gokayama washi paper making (fee applies).

Access Ainokura Gassho-zukuri Village
Ride a World Heritage Bus from JR Takaoka(80 min.) or JR Shin Takaoka(65min) or JR Johana Sta. (25 min.) and get off at Ainokura-guchi bus stop.
It’s a 5 min. walk from the bus stop to Ainokura Gassho-zukuri Village.
Suganuma Gassho-zukuri Village
Ride a a World Heritage Bus from JR Takaoka(95 min.) or JR Shin Takaoka(80min) or JR Johana Sta. (40 min.) and get off at Suganuma bus stop.
It’s a 1 min. walk from the bus stop to Suganuma Gassho-zukuri Village.

Kanaya-machi is the birthplace of Takaoka's copper casting. Visitors can experience copperware production for themselves while admiring the beautiful street of houses bringing together cobblestone alleys and latticed windows. Of course, visitors can enjoy shopping, too.
