  • ・ A Child is supposed to be aged between 6 and 11 on a rail pass collection date.
  • ・ An Adult's or Child's rail pass holder can accompany up to 2 infants aged 5 or younger for free.

Purchasing a rail pass exchange order overseas

Temporary visitor's visa

・ A MCO (Miscellaneous Charges Order―an exchange order for a rail pass) is available at sales locations overseas.
・ After entering in Japan, this order can be exchanged for a raill pass at exchange locations.
・ When exchanged, a MCO must be submitted with a passport, also an application form must be filled with necessary details.
・ All the following conditions must be met:
  • 1. A visitor must be holding a passport issued by a foreign government and entering in Japan as a "Temporary Visitor".
  • "Temporary Visitor" is a status of residence defined under Japanese immigration law.
    ※日本国籍のお客様は使用できません。
  • 2. Once issued, MCO must be exchanged in 3 months.

Overseas branches of Japan Airlines, All Nippon Airways, JTB, Nippon Travel Agency, Kinki Nippon Tourist, Top Tour and JALPAK, and travel agents specified by these companies.

Purchasing a rail pass in Japan
・ A rail pass is available at sales locations in Japan
・ When purchasing, a passport, a departure card (embarkation card), and a return plane/boat ticket (including a printed e-ticket) must be presented, also an application form must be filled with necessary details.
*An e-ticket must be printed out.
・ All the following conditions must be met:
  • ・ A visitor must be holding a passport issued by a foreign government and entering in Japan as a "Temporary Visitor".

Availability and Use

・ A rail pass is available and usable all year around.
・ A rail pass is valid for consecutive days.
・ The validity of a rail pass starts from 12 O'clock at night.

Additional separate tickets are required

Seating types

  • 1 First Class(Green)/Sleeper Tickets and separate Express Tickets are required.
  • 2 Separate Express Tickets are required.
  • 3 Separate Liner Tickets or numbered tickets are required.
  • 4 Only JR-WEST Miyajima Ferry Company’s services are valid.

  • When purchasing additional tickets is required, obtain such tickets at a JR-WEST, JR-Shikoku, or JR-Kyushu station before boarding.

Seat reservations

Obtaining a reserved seat ticket
  • ・ When reserving trains, reserved seat tickets or other additional tickets must be obtained at stations or other sales locations before boarding.
Canceling/Changeing reservations
  • ・ Reservations can be changed or cancelled as long as it is before the departure time of reserved trains.
Boarding a train without making advance seat reservations
  • ・ A rail pass holders who have not made seat reservations may use ordinary non-reserved seats on applicable trains.
  • ・ If there are empty seats in Ordinary Reserved Car after boarding, a rail pass holder may use these seats as long as there is no operational problem.

Changes

  • ・ The date a rail pass will start to be used from cannot be changed.
  • ・ The duration or the type of a rail pass cannot be changed.

Refunds

  • ・ Refund location: only where a rail pass was issued or exchanged
  • ・ Refund price: the sale price minus a handling fee (210 yen per rail pass)
  • - No refund will be given if a magnetic ticket is removed from a rail pass book.
  • - No refund will be given after a rail pass is start to be used or expired.
  • - No refund will be given due to non-availability of service, delays, or similar issues.

Miscellaneous information

  • ・ A rail pass is only valid for its rail pass holder only.
  • ・ A passport must be carried when a rail pass is used and presented when a JR staff asks to.
  • ・ A rail pass will be void if the magnetic ticket is detached from a rail pass book.
  • ・ A rail pass will not be reissued even if lost or stolen.
  • ・ Conditions of use for a rail pass are stipulated by JR's carriage conditions and laws of Japan.
  • ・ Conditions of use for an exchange order are stipulated by regulations and contracts of issuing companies.
  • ・ If any discrepancies arise between the foreign language and Japanese versions of the carriage conditions, the Japanese version has precedence.
