How to use JR-West
Classification of Adult and Child Fares
What are the age classifications for foreign visitors?
Adult : aged 12 years or older
Child : aged 6 to 11years
Infant : aged 1 to 5 years
Baby: aged less than 1 year old
(on the day that ticket is purhcased.)
How many infants can accompany an adult?
An adult may be accompanied by up to two infants at no charge within basic fare ticket coverage areas and with non-reserved seat tickets.
Are there any circumstances in which an infant would require a ticket?
If three or more infants accompany one "Adult" or "Child", a Child ticket is required from the third "Infant" onward.
A Child ticket is also required with reserved seat tickets.
However, with seating above the rank of reserved seating in ordinary cars, Child fare tickets for higher-rank trains (Green tickets, GranClass tickets, and sleeper tickets) are the same price as adult tickets.
Why do children's tickets cost the same as adult's tickets for green tickets, GranClass tickets and sleeper tickets?
This is because green cars, GranClass cars, and sleeper cars are more spacious and have higher-quality facilities than ordinary cars.
